Desert Rising: How the Arab World's Universities Just Shook Up the Leaderboard

QS Quacquarelli Symonds just released the QS Arab University Rankings 2027, and it's a big one. The global higher education experts evaluated 325 universities across 20 locations.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE each claim three top-10 spots. Meanwhile, Qatar, Lebanon, Oman and Jordan hold one apiece.

KFUPM holds first place again. Khalifa University jumps to second, while Qatar University slips to third.

Moreover, Abu Dhabi University climbs from 11th to 9th. Sultan Qaboos University also moves up to 7th.

Dr Ashwin Fernandes of QS says excellence is spreading well beyond a handful of systems. Morocco, for instance, now has two universities in the top 100.

Likewise, Al-Quds University rises seven places to 45th, the highest ever for a Palestinian university. HBKU also climbs six places to 23rd.

Egypt has 44 ranked universities, while Algeria is the most represented with 50. Saudi Arabia and the UAE each place 11 institutions in the top 50.

Overall, the region keeps getting stronger. So, keep watching, because next year's table could look very different!

Rooting for the Future: When Tanmiah Met the Environment Fund

Big news is blooming in Saudi Arabia. The Environment Fund has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tanmiah Food Company, and the goal is simple: strengthen cooperation across key environmental areas. H.E. Eng. Abdulrahman AlFadley, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, attended the signing.

Tanmiah isn't new to this. Its "One Million Trees" initiative has already planted more than 550,000 trees. Moreover, the MoU keeps that momentum going.

Next up is a SAR 2 million initiative to plant 100,000 trees in Al-Ahsa in 2026. Additional locations also feature in the cooperation plan.

Trees are only part of the story. The partnership also covers environmental research, funding mechanisms, and coordination on plans and activities. Furthermore, both parties will join local and international initiatives and exhibitions under the Fund's umbrella.

Munir Al-Sahli, Acting CEO of the Environment Fund, sees private-sector partnerships as long-term collaborations. They turn commitments into tangible projects, he says.

Zein Mohammed Attar, Managing Director of Tanmiah, agrees. She believes public and private efforts together create lasting impact.

This agreement sets a cooperation framework, nothing more yet. Any future projects or financial commitments will need separate agreements. Still, it supports Saudi Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative, and that's a promising start.

When Cameras Meet Camels: AI Heads Into the Desert

**DHAHRAN, Saudi Arabia** – Hikvision and Aramco have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced imaging technologies can support environmental monitoring and biodiversity protection.

So, what happened? The two organizations created a framework to assess potential areas of cooperation. First, they'll look at AI-enabled native vegetation health monitoring. Next, they'll examine fauna assessment and monitoring.

Meanwhile, environmental data analytics sits at the heart of this deal. Both parties intend to exchange expertise and evaluate technologies that help improve environmental data collection.

Ultimately, better data supports data-driven decision-making. That means smarter choices for sustainability initiatives.

However, the MoU doesn't stop there. The partners may also explore joint research, technical workshops, and innovative digital solutions. Additionally, they could advance AI-powered monitoring systems and integrate intelligent technologies with environmental data platforms.

In short, this MoU reflects a shared aim to explore innovative technologies that contribute to environmental protection. Likewise, it encourages knowledge exchange and targeted, effective digital solutions.

Therefore, keep watching. The desert may soon become one of the smartest ecosystems around.
