A Leap Towards Water Security: The Launch of Toray's RO Membrane Plant in Dammam

The Third Industrial City in Dammam recently witnessed a significant milestone with the commencement of pilot operations at the Toray reverse osmosis (RO) membrane plant. This state-of-the-art facility, established through a Saudi-Japanese partnership, stands as the largest of its kind in the Middle East. With a production capacity of up to 300,000 membranes annually, the plant encompasses all stages of manufacturing. The event was graced by a supervisory team from the Saudi Water Authority and the Local Content and Government Procurement Authority, underscoring the project's importance in the realm of water management.

This ambitious venture stems from an agreement signed with the Saudi Water Authority in November 2021, which aimed not only at localizing membrane manufacturing but also at transferring essential technical know-how. The significance of this project extends beyond mere production; it aligns with Saudi Arabia's broader objectives to enhance local content and cultivate strategic industries. By fostering technological innovation, the plant promises to contribute substantially to the Kingdom's GDP, with an estimated economic impact of SAR 1.14 billion over the duration of the agreement.

In tandem with the plant's launch, the opening of the Middle East Water Treatment Technical Center (MEWTEC) marks another significant development. Collaborating with local and international partners, as well as the Water Technology Innovation and Research Development Institute (WTIIRA), MEWTEC will drive advancements in water treatment technologies. Moreover, the plant is projected to create 147 direct job opportunities for Saudi nationals, fostering employment and capacity-building in the region. The anticipated annual growth in demand for RO membranes, estimated at 6% domestically and 7% regionally, further cements Saudi Arabia's position in the global water technology market.
